Naruto TCG: The Demo Decks Are a PDF Now

The two Gen Con demo decks made it out of Indianapolis. Not in a box. As a PDF.

Both sample decks from Bandai’s tutorial sessions have been floating around the community since late July, Naruto in red and Sasuke in blue, photographed, uploaded, sorted into databases. The new part is everything that grew up around them since. The proxy printer at oppp.online was a One Piece tool and nothing else. Now it has a Naruto tab. Paste the card codes, pick a card back, pull the PDF. Done.

By its own description the site covers „the full new Naruto TCG card pool – Leader, Character, Chakra and Summon cards“, and both Gen Con lists load straight into the deck builder. Cost? Nothing.

„Yes, completely free. No sign-up required to print proxies.“

Uploading your own cards needs an account. The demo decks need nothing but a browser. My prints come from the copy shop down the street, because my own printer makes full-bleed artwork look genuinely miserable. After that it’s the usual routine: sleeve them, shove a bulk card in behind each one as backing. My Magic commons from 2003 have had stranger second careers than this.

One line from the operator is worth reading anyway: „Proxies are not legal in official Bandai-sanctioned tournaments. This tool is intended for casual play, deck testing, and creative fan projects only.“ For Friday night at the kitchen table that changes exactly nothing. For Essen in October it changes nothing either, since you’ll be playing Bandai’s own demo decks there.

Then a post from r/NarutoCardGame landed this week, aiming at the same thing, only digital. A developer has been building a freeform table in the browser (basically a whiteboard for cards) and has now added the Gen Con decks.

„It doesn’t enforce rules or automate game logic, so you have complete freedom to move cards, tap, and test plays manually.“

Sounds like less than the big simulator projects promise. That’s the point.

What You Are Actually Testing

The frame is public: one Leader card, 51 cards in the deck, plus 5 Chakra cards and one Summon. Card types are Leader, Character, EX Character, Chakra and Summon. You win by pushing the opposing Leader’s Life to zero. All of it official, all of it confirmed since July 29.

The rest is open. Timing, costs, the order effects resolve in, what happens when two abilities collide. Which is exactly where every tournament gets decided later on. The project behind narutocardgamesim.com says so plainly and describes itself as still in „Rules mapping“, with no playable decks at all. narutosim.com meanwhile advertises a „rules-aware multiplayer simulator“ and the tagline „built for competitors“. For a game whose rulebook nobody outside Bandai has seen. How is that supposed to work?

Which is where the rules-free table quietly becomes the more honest option. It never claims to know the rules. You move cards, you tap, you decide what’s legal yourself (meaning: you argue about it, the way every new game starts out).

My take: proxy testing gives you a feel for the deck, never the rules. I did this a hundred times in Magic, printed lists against printed lists, before anyone spent money. You learn curves, tempo, which card sits dead in your hand. What you don’t learn is how a Chakra cost works in detail while the official rulebook does not exist yet. Anyone building a meta theory right now gets to throw it out in summer 2027.

For readers in Germany the practical value holds up regardless. SPIEL in Essen is still more than a month away, buying cards has to wait until 2027, and the sessions in Jakarta, Manila or Hong Kong are pure theory for most people here. A print run plus two hours at the living room table costs you an afternoon. Much better value than 350 euros for a box that does not exist yet.

The open question is how long Bandai keeps watching this calmly. With One Piece they ignored proxy tools for years, as long as nobody made money off them. My guess: it plays out the same way here, especially since the card images come from Bandai’s own press rollout.
