Naruto TCG: Bandai Reprints the $1,000 Card

Three weeks ago the CP-001 Chakra Card was the scarcest piece of cardboard in the Naruto universe. To get one you needed a Gen Con badge, a seat in a tutorial session that sold out early, and some luck. Copies then moved on eBay for four figures. The back of the card says „Not for Resale“.

On September 8, Bandai hands out that same card number at a baseball stadium. To tens of thousands of people. In one evening.

The official NCG site confirmed it on August 7, in a sentence dry enough that you could skim right past it:

A NARUTO CARD GAME „CHAKRA Card“ featuring the Yankees logo will be distributed at „NARUTO x YANKEES GAME NIGHT“ on September 8.

The venue is Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, the New York Yankees host the Colorado Rockies, and anyone through the gates early enough walks away with the CP-001 Chakra Card, New York Yankees Ver. Same card number as the Gen Con printing, with the Yankees logo added to the face.

A resource card, not a trophy

Worth a quick note, because „promo card“ sounds like a chase rare and this one isn’t. An NCG deck runs 51 cards, 5 Chakra cards and 1 Summon card. Chakra is the resource, and Bandai describes it as „Use Chakra to activate face down support cards. Unleash Ninjutsu to stop their attacks!“

So every player needs five. Not one sitting in a toploader, five doing actual work in the deck. An alternate-art version of a card you already run five copies of: in Magic that’s the full-art land situation, and prices there never tracked playability, only print run.

Which brings us to the interesting part.

The number nobody will state officially

Bandai won’t say how many cards exist for September 8. Others will, they just don’t agree. Dexerto reports the first 18,000 fans in the building, Resell Calendar says 40,000. Either figure is a different universe from Gen Con, where a few hundred people made it through the tutorials.

Even the lower number means one evening puts more CP-001 into circulation than the entire history of the game so far. And the market? Hasn’t blinked. Per Dexerto, completed presale sales on eBay ran between $599.99 and $700, with headband bundles reaching $850. For a card whose front nobody has officially seen.

The Yankees are also selling a ticket package with a guaranteed card and headband, which has pushed ticket prices for this one game noticeably upward. A baseball game as a card dispenser. That takes some doing.

My take: those presale numbers don’t survive September 8. Everyone in that stadium pays nothing, and 18,000 people holding a card are 18,000 potential sellers starting September 9. Scarcity was the whole argument, and Bandai is dismantling it themselves.

So what about the rest of us?

This is where it actually gets useful, since most of us aren’t popping over to the Bronx. The good news sits in the event pages Bandai published the same day.

At New York Comic Con (October 8 to 11, Javits Center, booth #2705) there are tutorial sessions with free admission and on-site registration. The participation gift is a CP-001 Chakra Card plus a logo sticker, one gift per person, one session per person. You need to be registered to the „NARUTO TCG UPDATES CHANNEL“ on BANDAI TCG+ and complete a short post-session survey. PAX Aus in Melbourne (October 9 to 11) lists word-for-word the same package.

The same pattern twice on two continents looks like the standard kit for every tutorial stop. And the official roadmap puts Spiel Essen (October 22 to 25) in exactly that category: tutorial sessions planned. There’s no dedicated Essen page with participation terms yet, though, and until there is, that’s a reasonable expectation rather than a commitment. Paris Games Week and Lucca sit in the same window.

One more thing buried in those event pages: the first official price tag the game has ever carried. A playmat at $35 plus tax, shipping in 2027, limited to one per person per day. For a European version, figure roughly 35 to 40 euros, which is the usual Bandai corridor, and EU pricing on this kind of item almost always lands numerically close to the dollar figure.

What I make of it

Bandai is running a play you rarely get to watch this openly. The brand is being pushed through channels that have nothing to do with card games, a full year before release. A stadium seating 40,000 reaches more people in one night than any convention, and most of them will be holding their first Naruto card on September 8 without ever having heard of a Chakra resource.

Whether any of that turns into players gets decided in summer 2027. Until then Bandai collects reach, and a few people in New York collect cards they will probably never play.

Which leaves the question closer to home: if Essen really does get the same tutorial package, how long will those cards last? Gen Con sessions were gone weeks in advance. Anyone heading to Essen in October who wants the CP-001 should mark September 3, that’s when the show’s floor assignments get sorted out.
