The official NCG roadmap lists exactly one German stop: SPIEL '26 in Essen, October 22-25, with tutorial sessions planned. What the Gen Con setup tells us about it, and why Essen will be the more honest test.

Gen Con wrapped today. Four days in Indianapolis, tutorial slots gone almost before anyone could click, a Kishimoto shikishi sitting behind glass. And what made it across the Atlantic to the rest of us? Basically nothing. No stream, no footage, just text fragments from the people who happened to be standing in the room.

What we did get is the one date that actually matters if you live in Germany.

The official NARUTO CARD GAME roadmap lists SPIEL ’26 in Essen, October 22–25, 2026. And the line next to it doesn’t say „appearance.“ Doesn’t say „showcase.“ It says the thing that counts: Tutorial Sessions planned. Same format that just produced those queues in Indianapolis. Real demo decks, real games, free.

It’s also the only German stop on the entire run-up to the Summer 2027 release. One. That’s the whole list.

Four days that decide whether this thing lands here

Why do I rate that above any trailer? Because a TCG doesn’t survive on people having seen it. It survives on people having played it. I watched that happen in Magic across two decades, I’m watching it happen right now in the Cyberpunk TCG, and One Piece ran the identical pattern: online hype was one thing, but the actual player base grew at tables.

Bandai has three European stops penciled in for the October block. Essen and Paris Games Week (both October 22–25), then Lucca Comics & Games from October 28 to November 1. Notice anything? Essen and Paris run at exactly the same time. Two major European shows, the same four days, one publisher that somehow has to explain its brand-new flagship at both of them at once.

Doable, sure. Bandai has the staff. It still says something about priorities, though. Nobody schedules their most important market date directly on top of a second important market date if the plan is to squeeze both dry.

There’s an Essen-specific wrinkle on top of all that, and 2026 is the first year it applies: SPIEL fills all eight halls of the fairgrounds. It has never been bigger. Anyone who has ever tried to reach a demo table on a Saturday afternoon in Essen knows exactly what that means for a new release with a Naruto logo on it.

What Gen Con tells us about Essen, and what it doesn’t

Two words. That’s the sum total of what Bandai has published about Essen. No times, no registration process, nothing on promos. What we do have is the Indianapolis blueprint, and that one was run on a very short leash.

Here’s how it went: advance sign-up through the Gen Con system opening June 21, one tutorial per person for the whole convention, duplicate bookings canceled without notice. The session itself ran in Room 121 behind a closed door under a hard recording ban, meaning no photos, no video, no audio. Anyone who finished walked out with a gift set containing the CP-001 „Chakra Card -Gen Con 2026 Ver.-“ promo (which required registering for the TCG+ channel and completing a survey), a backpack limited to a daily allotment, a sticker, and a purchase voucher for the official playmat at $35 plus tax, valid only on the day of attendance.

Whether any of that carries over to Essen, Bandai hasn’t said. My guess is tutorial sessions with advance registration plus some form of participation goodie, because that has been the standard Bandai convention playbook for years. Guessing isn’t knowing, though. Show up in October treating a promo card as a given and you might walk away annoyed.

The part of the Gen Con setup that stuck with me wasn’t the merch anyway. It was that recording ban. Bandai lets you play but not document, and then in the same breath asks attendees to post their impressions under #NARUTOTCG. Curated enthusiasm. For Essen that means one thing: if you’re there, you’re the source for the rest of us.

The quiet factor is called Asmodee

Then on July 30 came the announcement that matters more for long-term German availability than any convention ever will. Asmodee takes over distribution of the NARUTO CARD GAME across the entire European Economic Area: hobby retail, specialty retail and mass market.

„We’re proud to add the NARUTO CARD GAME to our portfolio of games published by our fantastic partners.“ — Marjolein Lubberman, Chief Commercial Officer at asmodee

Asmodee already handles One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, Digimon and Gundam for Bandai in Europe. The machine exists. It just has to push one more product through it. And Asmodee traditionally holds serious floor space at SPIEL, so I wouldn’t be shocked if the Essen presence ends up looking a whole lot less like a Bandai solo act than Indianapolis did.

On the pricing question that keeps showing up in the comments here: the $35 playmat is a US event price and it does not convert into any useful euro figure. Once Asmodee is in the chain, costing, VAT and retail margin all run through European structures. What that means in practice stays unknown until actual products get listed. And they haven’t been, despite the pre-orders already floating around in shops.

The community isn’t waiting for Bandai

While Bandai seals off the demo rooms, the scene keeps building its own way in. Over on r/NarutoCardGame, u/goldendarkness8 just put out a template for custom playmats, free to download, for a game whose card pool hasn’t even been fully shown yet. Several fan-made simulators are running too, assembled out of trailer stills and rule fragments. Wild, honestly.

From Indianapolis, the tone was mostly approval. @OrangeSamuraiD on X, straight after the demo: „Did the Naruto Card Game Demo at Gen Con! It was awesome, I can’t wait for the release!“ It rarely got more granular than that, which shouldn’t surprise anybody given a moderated tutorial round with pre-built decks. First impressions are first impressions. They aren’t balance verdicts.

My read: Essen will be the more honest test. SPIEL isn’t full of convention enthusiasts sampling everything for four days straight. It’s a mixed crowd of heavy hobbyists, families, and people pulled in purely by the Naruto logo who have never built a TCG deck in their lives. If the resource system, five Chakra cards that get flipped face down instead of rested, plus a single Summon card, clicks at a table like that inside ten minutes, it works. If it doesn’t, Bandai will notice a lot faster there than in a closed room full of fans.

Between Essen and launch there’s still the big information reveal in December, and in-store tutorial sessions starting January 2027. That’s the point where this gets real for most of you. Not the trade show. The shop down the road.

Until then: four days in October, one hall somewhere among eight, and the chance to touch this thing before anybody has an opinion about it. I’m planning to be there.

Who else is heading to Essen in October? And more to the point, be honest with me: what do you actually want answered at that demo table? Drop it in the comments and I’ll take the questions with me.
