Naruto TCG’s Gen Con Promo Is Already on eBay

Gen Con opened yesterday, and the least surprising prediction of the week has already come true: the CP-001 „Chakra Card -Gen Con 2026 Ver.-“ is on eBay. Not next week, once the hall is torn down. Right now, with the show still running.

Quick refresher on what the card even is. Play one of the NARUTO CARD GAME tutorial sessions in Indianapolis and you walk away with a gift set: the CP-001 promo, a special backpack, a logo sticker, and a purchase voucher for the official playmat that ships in 2027 anyway. The session costs nothing. All you need is a Gen Con badge. A few hours later, the first of those free cards are sitting online with four-figure price tags.

Bandai doesn’t want money for that card — it wants your email address

The fine print on the official event page is the genuinely interesting part. Not everyone who sits down at the table gets the Chakra card. Per Bandai, eligibility runs through the „NARUTO TCG UPDATES CHANNEL“ on TCG+ — you have to be registered there and complete a survey afterward.

Two hard caps on top of that. Across the entire convention you may join exactly one tutorial session. And the participation prize is one per person, no matter how many sessions somebody reserves or actually shows up for. So much for the shadow clone approach, which is almost certainly the point. The backpack you can grab separately at booth #605 in the Exhibition Hall runs first come, first served, one per person, and anyone who got one on a given day doesn’t get a second the next.

Smart design, honestly. Bandai isn’t giving a card away, Bandai is buying newsletter signups and paying in scarcity. That’s not a complaint, it’s how the business works now. Just call it what it is instead of reading pure fan service into it.

$2,000? That’s the ask. Nobody has paid it.

Now the numbers making the rounds. Two listings sit on eBay’s Malaysian site: one at RM 5,520.83, another at RM 8,996.90. Roughly $1,300 and $2,100 depending on the day’s rate. At least one listing has surfaced on eBay.de as well.

And here’s where somebody who has played Magic through roughly three card-frame generations has to pump the brakes. Those are asking prices. Asking prices are not sale prices.

Anyone who has scrolled the marketplaces the weekend after a prerelease knows the pattern. Day one, the foils go up at triple-digit numbers because somebody is testing whether a FOMO buyer bites. Two weeks later the real price is a fraction of that. Or the listing is still sitting there, unsold, a small monument to its creator’s optimism. The only number that counts comes from completed sales. That takes a few days.

So where does the fantasy come from? The obvious comparison. Disney Lorcana’s D23 promos from 2023 really did move for around $500, with graded copies pushing toward $4,000. That math is probably running in a few heads right now as they list their Gen Con card. Whether it works out won’t be clear before the weekend is over — and for a game that doesn’t hit shelves until summer 2027, I wouldn’t want to call it.

What about the rest of us?

That’s exactly what somebody on the subreddit is asking, with a collecting résumé worth tipping your hat to. User ezaudiolabs writes:

„Hi folks, to those attending GenCon, how is the naruto tcg merch being distributed? Is it a chance to buy 1 per person for each attendee of the tutorial session? Or are they more easily available? I don’t live in the US and have been collecting naruto tcg since the carddass era so I’d love to be there in person to participate… I’m trying to have a grasp of how hard these are will be to come by later on“

Collecting since the Carddass era, doesn’t live in the US, and just wants to know how hard these will be to find later. The answer is unsatisfying but clear: very hard. One gift set per person, at a single location that requires a badge and a plane ticket. And the tutorial slots were spoken for well in advance.

For everyone outside North America that means watching, not bidding. The single European stop on the Fest tour and the tutorial sessions at Spiel Essen in October are the realistic chances to get physically close to this game. Whether there’s an exclusive promo waiting there too, Bandai hasn’t said. I’d bet on it — but a bet isn’t a confirmation.

My take, stripped of romance: if you want the CP-001 as a collector’s piece, wait. The first weeks after an event like this belong to the people who want to sell fast, not the people who want to buy. Six months from now we’ll know whether the card is genuinely special or simply the first of many event promos in a game whose entire market phase is still ahead of it.
